5 Self Care Tips for Skiers and Snowboarders

Being outside in the elements during the winter season is hard on our skin and hair. Thankfully there are a few things that you can add to your self-care routine. Follow these tips to protect and care for your face, hands and hair during the ski season.

Protect your face with a soft and cozy balaclava

Protection and prevention is key for skincare, so don't leave your face exposed to the elements while you're skiing or snowboarding. If you don't already have a balaclava snowboard mask, let me tell you, they're like a blanket for your face.

They're soft and cozy and can fit over your ski helmet. A balaclava snowboard mask will save your face from the wind, snow and sun as you fly down the slopes.

Wear sunblock to protect against snow reflection

Apply a face lotion with sunblock in it the morning before you head to the ski resort on overcast and sunny days. It's best to apply sunscreen before you leave the house, as part of your morning routine, so you don't forget as you get ready to hit the slopes.

The sun has a strong reflection off of the snow, causing skin to burn more quickly than if you were outdoors surrounded by a grassy landscape. It's also easier to forget to apply sunblock when you're surrounded by snow, but you can definitely get a sunburn while skiing.

Apply intensive care hand lotion before and after you wear gloves

Winter weather causes the skin on hands to become dry and cracked more easily. Before you slip your hands into your gloves, treat them to some moisturizer.

Apply a generous amount of intensive care hand lotion before and after you snowboard.

Carry glove liners and keep your gloves on, girl!

When waiting in the lift line or sitting on the chair lift, it's tempting to take your gloves off to check your phone, change your music, and make other adjustments. But if you're noticing your hands are dry and cracked after a day on the slopes, it's important to keep your hands inside your gloves whenever you're outside.

If bulky gloves or mittens are making it too difficult to adjust your gear, buy gloves that include liners to keep a thin glove protection your hands.

Braid your hair to protect it from the wind

There's no better feeling than flying down the ski slopes, but we can save the wind blowing through our hair for the movies. Skiers and snowboarders travel at high speeds down the mountain and that wind is a lot of damage to your hair, which can cause split ends.

Braids are the easiest way to keep your hair out of your face and protected from wind damage. Style hair in one or two braids and keep them tucked inside your jacket or burka if you can.
